Step Kids: Little Angel of the North

By 2010 it was estimated the majority of children in Britain’s classrooms were likely to be in a step family. In this 6 part series, Ch4 gives them a voice, opening with ‘Little Angel of the North’ – a portrait of a troubled 14 year old girl Jemma from Sunderland, who’s most recent step father Peter appeared almost overnight when her mother returned from Scotland and announced she had re-married for the third time. Jemma says she has ‘so many families it’s absolutely ridiculous’ and vows to leave home when the clock strikes 12 on her 16th birthday.

“An intelligent and genuinely interesting documentary” …The Independent

“The experience of being in a stepfamily is increasingly common yet few documentary makers have looked at this until this affecting film “…The Times

“This film is reminiscent of watching a Mike Leigh Film. …Step Kids director Catey Sexton presents the problems which confront 14 year old Jemma with delicacy and balance. Making what could have been just another fly on the wall documentary be as compelling as it is touching “…The Daily Mail

“Please watch this we can’t be any plainer than that. The less than enthralling premise belies an absolutely superb piece of gentle-warming television…. the closing scene is one of the most touching bonding moments to grace the small screen ever. Again please watch this.”…Mail on Sunday
